Biography

Héctor Pérez-Urbina is a Senior Research Scientist at Clark & Parsia, LLC. He joined C&P in February 2010 after getting his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Oxford. His main research interests are in the areas of Description Logics and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, and their application to the problems of ontology-based data access and information integration.

At Oxford, he was a member of the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning group, working under the supervision of professor Ian Horrocks and doctor Boris Motik. His doctoral thesis focused on the development of query rewriting algorithms for answering conjunctive queries over tractable Description Logics.

Before starting his PhD, he spent two summers at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique et de Mathématiques Appliquées de Grenoble (ENSIMAG) in France, working on ontology-based data access under the supervision of doctor Genoveva Vargas-Solar and professor Christine Collet. He received his Bachelor's degree in Computer Systems Engineering with Summa Cum Laude from the Universidad de las Américas, Puebla in Mexico in June 2005.

Héctor lives in DC. He enjoys biking, playing tennis, and writing in his blog (mostly in Spanish).
