Once again, we meet in Brussels, at FOSDEM, to talk about the state of free software SDR. The intro will recap the year, and give some updates on what's new and great in the SDR world.

Welcome to the Software Defined Radio track! As in the last couple of years, we will talk about anything related to software defined radio: Interesting hacks, SDR hardware, wireless security, homebrew radar, academical research, etc. Here, we introduce the track and topics, and welcome all fans and afficionados of the SDR track!

The software defined radio track has been part of FOSDEM since 2014, and has been choc-a-block with talks an all kinds of topics related to software defined radio. This year again, we'll be talking about a variety of topics ranging from interesting hacks to SDR hardware, wireless security, homebrew radar, academical research and many other things that fall into this wide field.

SDR projects have come a long way, and allow users to do all sorts of things, ranging from telecoms services (e.g. setting up a base station) to all kinds of scientific purposes (radio astronomy, DSP, etc.).

In this panel, we want to bring together leaders from various projects as well as community members, and discuss the future of free SDR, and identify possible areas of collaboration.

As SDR communities, we will discuss these topics (among others):

• What are the near- and long-term goals for free SDR projects?
• How can we collaborate?
• Have we missed areas where we could use more action (between GNU Radio and the others we have the scientific stuff and the telecoms stuff sorted out, but what else is there)?
• Which communities do we want to engage with?

We invite project leaders, but also all community members to join us for this discussion.

RFNoC (RF Network-on-Chip) is a framework that allows easy and rapid development of FPGA signal processing systems, with the same FPGA and host code to be used across multiple devices and applications.

Its general architecture will be presented first and then the current implementation state of a practical RFNoC block designed to accelerate RTSA-like (fosphor) spectrum visualization will be described.

At 28C3 we introduced the very first steps of the osmo-gmr projects. During this talk, we will present the various advances that have been made in this project on various aspects (voice codec, crypto algorithm, ...)

GMR-1 (GEO Mobile Radio) is a satellite phone protocol derived from GSM. The main operator using this protocol is Thuraya and is mainly active in the middle east and asia. osmo-gmr is a project of the osmocom family whose goal is to implement the various levels of a GMR stacks, starting from SDR signal acquisition up to the actual voice layer. At 28C3 we gave and introductory talk to the project which was pretty new at the time. On this talk, we will quickly summarize what was presented last time and then move on to the new stuff. The two main obstacles to implement a practical monitoring software for GMR-1 were the secret crypto algorithm and the unknown voice codec. Both obstacles have now been lifted and we will present the details of how that happened. We will also look toward the next steps and other aspects of the system that we're planning to dig into.

Osmocom stands for Open-Source MObile COMmunication. It's an umbrella project for several sub-projects that focus on implementing various telecom standard. A growing part of these are using SDR and theses are the the ones that will be presented in this talk.

Among theses are rtl-sdr, a library to use cheap dvb-t dongle as SDR receiver; gr-osmosdr, a GNURadio source block to support multiple capture hardware easily in your apps; osmo-tetra, an sdr implementation of a TETRA receiver; osmo-gmr, a protocol stack for this satphone standard; gr-fosphor, a GPU accelerated spectrum visualization block for GNURadio.

This year is the first year that FOSDEM will have a developer room dedicated to Software Defined Radio. Here, we will present a quick overview of SDR projects out there and those attending FOSDEM and then start off the day.
