A lightning look at implementing MapStore, aided by a custom recipe built using a Juypter notebook in MS Visual Studio Code (with PowerShell and Juypter extensions).

Whanganui Maps is our public portal for viewing interactive geospatial Maps, Dashboards and GeoStories relating to the Whanganui District in New Zealand. The solution is based on the MapStore project. Implementation of MapStore is aided by a custom recipe built using a Juypter notebook in MS Visual Studio Code (with PowerShell and Juypter extensions). The notebook allows us to add notes about each implementation step and helps ensure the process is very repeatable.

A look at Whanganui District Councils GIS Stack implemented with FOSS4G solutions. For Whanganui District Council, implementing an FOSS4G GIS stack provides a cost-effective alternative to proprietary GIS software, as well as greater flexibility and control over the entire GIS system.

A GIS stack is a collection of software and tools used in Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to store, manage, manipulate, analyze, and display geospatial data. The stack typically includes several components, each with its own purpose and functionality, that work together to provide a complete GIS solution. The new FOSS4G GIS Stack has benefited Council greatly through; significant recurring cost savings, greater functionality, new functionality driven by community, improved service levels and no loss of Integration with other Council systems.

Whanganui District Council utilized the Whitebox Hydrological Modelling Tools in QGIS to create Overland Flow Paths and Ground Depression Areas from our 2021 LiDAR datasets. The talk will also describe how we style the layers in QGIS and an analysis use case for the datasets produced.

Hydrological modelling can be performed in QGIS using WhiteboxTools, which is a powerful open-source geospatial data analysis and processing platform. WhiteboxTools provides a set of hydrological analysis tools that can be used for modeling stream networks, watersheds, flow accumulation, and other hydrological variables. For Whanganui District Council, Overland flow paths are a common way of representing the predicted path of stormwater as it flows over the topography and we use depression areas to map the potential extent of stormwater ponding if the stormwater network is full or failure occurs within the network. By combining Whitebox Tools with QGIS, Whanganui District Council was able to perform in-house complex hydrological modeling tasks using open-source software, which helped save time and money while improving the accuracy and reliability of our analysis.

The QGIS Model Designer is a powerful tool that we can use to define a workflow and run a chain of algorithms (a processing model). In this workshop we will create a processing model in the QGIS Model Designer and learn how to effectively use some of the features.

A normal session with the processing framework tools includes more than running a single algorithm. Usually several of them are run to obtain a result, and the outputs of some of those algorithms are used as input for some of the other ones. Using the QGIS Model Designer, that workflow can be put into a processing model, which will run all the necessary algorithms in a single run, thus simplifying the whole process and automating it. In this workshop we will create a processing model in the QGIS Model Designer that displays buildings affected by some event within a distance from an event location.
