The current Linux packaging used by Apache OpenOffice is inefficient in many ways. We can take advantage of technologies like AppImage, snap and flatpak in order to make OpenOffice easier to install for Linux desktop users, while saving disk space for releases at the same time.

The Apache OpenOffice wiki is the major source of information about OpenOffice for developers. A major restructuring is ongoing an d we will discuss what has been done and what remains to be done.

OpenOffice Writer offers all features needed for basic frequency analysis and visualization. We'll see how to do automated text analysis and simple word clouds without using specialized external tools.

While typically done through dedicated natural language processing tools, text mining can be done at a basic level using OpenOffice too. We'll see how to leverage on OpenOffice's built-in features for automated text analysis.

Even a simple typo correction has to travel a long journey from the OpenOffice User Interface to the source code, to the translation team and all the way back into the new release. We will explore the involved process, tools and how the process can be streamlined.

It is time for Apache OpenOffice to change direction and focus outwards, including collaboration with other projects. Leaving all the non-technical issues out, we will discuss what the technical ones are and how they can be solved.

The XHTML Export filter in OpenOffice has traditionally been quite limited. In an ongoing project, students are being mentored to integrate work by Habib Louafi based on an older version of OpenOffice into the current trunk. This work adds substantial new features such as: support for fonts, better layout, better support for images, and support for shapes. We will see the technical progress, but also the process with students working in different phases and having to work around licensing issues and dependency issues.

We will go through the steps needed to create and maintain a dictionary for Apache OpenOffice, including how to package it for the Extensions web site and how to include it in the builds available for download from the official site. Then we will have a look at how to improve the maintenance of Apache OpenOffice dictionaries through web services, revisiting a proposal I originally made at OOoCon 2010 in Budapest.
