3 years ago, I was working with Pieter Hintjens, main author of ZeroMQ and organiser of the IOT devroom, on a demo setup for his last conference at IOT Munich.

When he came back from Munich, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

We demonstrated a pile of OpenWRT routers blinking LED lamps in an orchestrated way.

Most of my work included assembling the hardware, writing OpenWRT packages, making a CI/CD for the devices.

I will show how to build OpenWRT packages with new cluster technologies, like Kubernetes.

In this live demo, I will show how to blink an ESP8266 board via a CI/CD pipeline hosted on Gitlab.com. Gitlab-ci is connected to a stripped down Kubernetes cluster (K3S fork) hosted on a local raspberry-pi board, to which we have attached an ESP8266 board. I will explain how to use the new Arduino CLI instead of the Arduino IDE.

Pieter Hintjens was a writer, programmer and thinker who has spent decades building large software systems and on-line communities, which he describes as "Living Systems". He was an expert in distributed computing, having written over 30 protocols and distributed software systems. He designed AMQP in 2004, and founded the ZeroMQ free software project in 2007. He was the author of the O'Reilly ZeroMQ book, "Culture and Empire", "The Psychopath Code", "Social Architecture", and "Confessions of a Necromancer". He was the president of the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII), and fought the software patent directive and the standardisation of the Microsoft OOXML Office format. He also organized the Internet of Things (IOT) Devroom here at FOSDEM for the last 3 years. In April 2016 he was diagnosed with terminal metastasis of a previous cancer.

The Unitary Patent is the third major attempt to legalize software patents in Europe. The second attempt to codify EPO software patents failed in 2005, after many years of debate, the directive was rejected under the request of large multinational corporations, that prefered the creation of a central patent court over the debate on software patents.

The Unitary Patent Court is a deeply flawed project, as it is based on dubious economic studies, a rogue patent office (the EPO), a court stuffed with biased patent specialists, and is out of parliamentary control. It will participate to global patent warming, rubberstamp software patents, multiply the number of patent trolls, and increase the entry cost for defendants, which is already out of reach for many of us.
