dbdeployer is a tool that helps developers and DBAs to quickly deploy a single MySQL server of any version, without affecting existing servers in the same host. It can also deploy, in a single machine, a test system for replication in several topologies (master/slave, single or multi primary group replication, multi-source replication). The tool creates sandboxes that are equipped with customised scripts that allow users to manipulate and test all the deployed databases. This talk will show the main scenarios where dbdeployer is useful, with examples of usage and tips for a quick start.

MySQL 8.0 introduced roles: a new security and administrative feature that allows DBAs to simplify user management and increases security of multi-user environments. Using roles is easy, once you have digested all the documentation. For the uninitiated, though, the approach could be disappointing, and even give the feeling of not working at all. This quick demo will show some examples of how to deal with roles for several scenarios, how to assign roles to users, and how to use them effectively. Since there are several ways of assigning roles, the examples will cover both the roles granted as default and the cases where users can switch from one role to another within a session.

Docker and MySQL are two mainstream technologies that are reshaping the IT environment and the web economy. While using MySQL is reasonably straightforward, using it in Docker may prove challenging. This talk will show the main points of Docker operations with plenty of easy-to-follow examples, including MySQL in replication using containers.

Running database operations in containers is a slightly different proposition than running other services. MySQL, being designed - as the majority of services - for running in a dedicated host, needs some adjusting to fit in a container. Thanks to its configurability, we can deploy many MySQL containers to fit our purposes, with just the right amount of customization. However, customizing MySQL in Docker is not as easy as it would be when you have a full machine at your disposal. This talk will show examples of how to combine MySQL best practices with the ones that apply to containers. The net result will be the deployment of dozens of MySQL instances with little effort.

Out of the box, MySQL replication does not allow true multi-master topologies. Since it only supports one pipeline, the replication service is an all-or-nothing matter. Using Tungsten Replicator, instead, not only you can define topologies with multiple masters easily, but you can also set filters and conditions for each pipeline. With asynchronous replication, conflict resolution is hard to implement. But what you can do is conflict PREVENTION. If you want to define a system of records (each source is authorized to modify some of the data) in your multi-master topology, Tungsten offers you tools to achieve your goal easily. This talk will show how you can define which sources can update each schema, and how Tungsten enforces the rules, according to your needs. Demos are done using star and fan-in topologies.

Problem: you want to test many different builds of MySQL. There is a proliferation of MySQL versions and builds. Working as a DBA or as a consultant, you will find large installations of MySQL 5.0 to 5.5, with subtle variations among them. In the same company there may several versions of MySQL 5.1, or you may find a mix of vanilla MySQL and Percona or MariaDB builds. For all these version, you often need to reproduce a problem using the same version being used in production, and often you need to install several test servers in the same host for this purpose. Then there are the work-in-progress versions that Oracle and other companies are producing. And you want to test them before adopting them. This workshop will explain quickly how MySQL Sandbox works, and then show with practical examples how to test several combinations of servers in a single host quickly and painlessly. It will also show examples of how to use MySQL Sandbox to solve practical administration tasks, such as re-playing binary logs or producing a filtered binlog.
