Decentralized moderation is difficult. For privacy and federation reasons, no server and no server admin has access to all the data and all authorizations. Bots could have access to authorizations but how can you deploy then, trust them and how can you make sure that they also have access to all data? In this presentation, we'll show some of the ongoing work on Mjölnir for All, an exciting project that aims to transform moderation on the Matrix network, without end-user configuration.

In this presentation, we'll talk about both the core concepts of federated moderation in Matrix and the main moderation tools. Expect to hear about power levels, redactions, quarantine, abuse reports, Mjölnir and plans for the near future!

The size of JavaScript frameworks and apps increases and won't stop increasing any time soon. Unfortunately, this causes large performance issues, both because the files are large and because the browser needs to spend considerable time parsing them.

The JavaScript Binary AST is a new content developed by Mozilla, Bloomberg and Facebook to speed things up, both by making files smaller, and by making it much faster for your JavaScript VM to parse them – all if this without needing to minify or uglify your code, unless you want to.

Let's see how it works!

Large websites and webapplications commonly provide pages that require loading of Megabytes (sometimes tens of Megabytes) of JavaScript code. That's bad both for the network and for the loading speed of the page. While source code minifiers can help, they make the code harder to read and debug, and sometimes slower to load. The JavaScript Binary AST is an ongoing work to extend the JavaScript Virtual Machines with a novel compression format that should make the code both smaller and faster to parse, without making it hard to read and debug.

We'll present the JavaScript Binary AST, as well as the tradeoffs we need to make between parsing speed and file size to guarantee safety and make it compatible with future versions of JavaScript.

The Word Health Organization estimates that more than 250 million people suffer from vision impairment, 36 millions of them being entirely blind. In many cases, their impairment prevents them from living independently. To complicate things further, about 90% of them are estimated to live in low-income situations.

Project Lighthouse was started by Mozilla to try and find low-cost technological solutions that can help vision-impaired people live and function on their own. To this date, we have produced several prototypes designed to aid users in a variety of situations.

Let's look at some of them.

Redox is an attempt to make a complete, fully-functioning, general-purpose operating system with a focus on safety, freedom, reliability, correctness, and pragmatism.

So how do we get there? By keeping the kernel minimal, both in terms of syscalls and in terms of size. By writing the code in Rust, a modern, memory-safe and type-safe systems programming language. By maintaining minimal privileges, through a general capability-based system.

Redox is an ambitious project, but it already runs on real hardware. Let's take a look.
