Protomaps is a simple, self-hostable system for tiled vector datasets. In the year since last FOSS4G, we've rolled out a new compressed specification (V3), added support for tile generation tools, and open sourced key integrations with content delivery networks. This talk will give an overview of: * Why you might want to, or not want to, deploy Protomaps for your application * PMTiles write support in the popular Tippecanoe and Planetiler tools * The new open source integrations of Protomaps with AWS Lambda and Cloudflare * Overview of real-world deployments for users in web GIS, journalism and the public sector

OpenStreetMap consists of tagged nodes, ways and relations. Many use cases of geographic data, however, need a tabular dataset of points, lines and polygons. Processing OSM into derivative datasets is a crucial task that can benefit from new tools and formats. This talk will cover several topics around this theme, including: * Existing approaches such as the Export Tool * Why FlatGeobuf is a suitable forwards-thinking format * Computational challenges for processing global-scale relations * A new open-source program, Protoshapes, to generate admin polygons in FlatGeobuf format * Efficient approaches for global datasets such as coastlines, oceans, and road connectivity * Frequently updating datasets using the open-source OSM Express database

I explore the spectrum of web map rendering techniques between raster and vector, and outline new approaches towards making universal map applications with OSM.

OSM's mission is to create a free, global dataset of geodata for diverse applications. A mainstream OSM use case is **web cartography**: the graphical display of geographic features on the standardized browser platform. Cartographers want to make beautiful, labeled, multi-resolution maps; maps need to be loaded progressively for a smooth user experience. The web map status quo centers around two distinct approaches. One approach, used by the OSM Carto project, is server-rendered raster map tiles displayed as images in the browser. Another approach is to use a WebGL framework that consumes tiles of vector features. In the first part of this talk, I will investigate the tradeoffs inherent in these approaches with regards to **multilingual text and internationalization**, as these pose limitations for localizing OSM applications to different languages and cultures. The second part of this talk will introduce new techniques and libraries for rendering OSM data that are a compromise between the raster and vector map ecosystems. I'll demonstrate some of these ideas in protomaps.js, a new Canvas2D and Leaflet-based open source map rendering library.
