The LibreOffice build system provides integration with a set of IDEs including Kdevelop, Eclipse, Vim/YouCompleteMe, QtCreator and Visual Studio. This allows developers on all platforms to use their preferred environment and still IDE features like code-completion on many of them without the need to manually maintain all of those. Gbuild, the LibreOffice build system, exports most relevant data about this to JSON files, which then can be used to create project solutions on multiple IDEs. This talk describes how we got there, past and future challenges and opportunities. It might also be of interest for other projects interested in providing something similar.

LibreOffice recently has finished to use a consistent build system, this made it easy to now allow it to be debugged, modified and improved in an IDE for developers.

This lecture will show how we improved LibreOffice to be debugged, edited and hacked upon in an IDE with nice features like code-completion. It will show some examples on how easy this makes contributing to LibreOffice and how the support of such tools can make you an contributor too.

LibreOffice now uses a purely GNU make based gbuild build system, where do we get from here?

Now that we can leave behind the artificial restrictions of the old system, while enjoying the opportunities of the freedoms gained with the new system, we can reap what we sowed: IDE integration, reliable incremental builds, sensible splitting of the build for packaging and building a directly runnable relocatable product without additional copies are a few benefits we already achieved. More will soon join these, making it even more "ridiculously easy" (Karl Fogel) to build and develop LibreOffice.
