How do you design a user experience to guide both grassroot contributors as well as the advanced data researchers? That's what we were trying to solve in the past year for OONI Probe, the internet censorship measurement tool which enables thousands of activists worldwide to measure their network and automatically report potential anomalies of censorship. As part of the Tor Project, OONI Probe is vital to in helping the Internet Freedom movement, as all data gathered is Freely accessible as Open Data.

During the talk we will go through the redesigned OONI Probe 2.0 for Mobile and Desktop and explain the new design system and how we hope to design an experience which enables both advanced and beginners to OONI and measuring internet censorship.

We are going to introduce Identihub, a self hosted solution for visual asset hosting licensed under the AGPL v3 license and show how to easily make your SVG files convertable for non designers

Free Open Source Software often fails to gain wider traction due to focusing on its technical aspects over other aspects. While Documentation, Design and Marketing quickly fall behind. Let's have a look at basic steps we can take as free software maintainers to offer potential contributors access to visual assets the same way we offer them access to our source code. What started with Community Design in January 2016, evolved and inspired a new rebranding process of the Mozilla brand, by opening it up to a broader audience who were able to follow and comment on the process step by step.

We will have a look back at 2016, what we learned from Open Design at Mozilla and introduce the new Mozilla brand which will roll out throughout 2017.

Open Source and Free Software communities have an alternative work and collaboration culture compared to classic working environments. In this talk, we can learn though how to add transparency to our workflow, and praise "sharing is caring" more than "made by me".

Designers in an open source community or environment are not easy; neither for the designer, neither for those working with her/him. Open Source and Free Software communities have an alternative work and collaboration culture compared to classic working environments.

Lately, designers have taken a more and more important role in such communities, originally initiated by developers and programmers. Just think of the Firefox logo, how important it is to such a big movement and community.

However, designers are difficult beings; we often can't get over our ego, are perfectionists in unneeded ways and often, like magicians, don't want to share our materials or tricks. That's why it's often hard for a designer to work "in the open".

We can learn though how to add transparency to our workflow, and praise "sharing is caring" more than "made by me". Licenses like Creative Commons, Open Document Formats and similar. are the most powerful tools of a designer in an open source community. We are able to become better designers, and better contributors at the same time, following a few simple principles.
