Covid-19 took me off the road and I turned back to my trusty guitar. Surprisingly there are many great resources on line to help you learn ,or relearn, how to play. This is a examination of those resources and my ride from extreme mediocrity to modest mediocrity with six stings .

I used to travel 25-40 percent of each month as a software evangelist until Covid-19 made me stay home. Then I rediscovered my favorite guitar and turned to the internet for resources to help me develop some skills. This s an overview of what you can find on the internet to help, how to set up a practice schedule, and actually become somewhat proficient in playing.

MySQL has added many new features to make user account management easier. The server can now generate random passwords that follow the rules you manage. If you have too many 'Dave's or 'Fred's in your organization, you can store GCOS like information in the mysql.user.User_attributes column to directly identify who you are referencing. And you can now have dual passwords on an account. These additions can make account management much easier but only if you know about them!

MySQL has now been arounds for over a quarter of a century. So what has really changed since 3.21 has become available? So how did a little programming project become the ubiquitous database? This session is a look at the many changes in the product, the company, and the people involved in MySQL.

MySQL replication has been around for well over a decade and the latest version of MySQL has a lot of advancements. InnoDB cluster provides a fault tolerant, highly available cluster. Groups can operate in a single-primary mode with automatic primary election, where only one server accepts updates at a time with read-only replicas to split the load. Alternatively, groups can be deployed in multi-primary mode, where all servers can accept updates, even if they are issued concurrently. And to make bringing a new cluster member online easier,there is a clone plugin permits cloning data locally or from a remote MySQL server instance. Cloned data is a physical snapshot of data stored in InnoDB that includes schemas, tables, tablespaces, and data dictionary metadata to have the new system operational as quickly as possible. MySQL Router is a Level 4 proxy to handle the flow of your data. Plus there are utilities in the New MySQL Shell, mysqlsh, for the easy administration of a cluster. So if you have not looked at MySQL replication in a while your will be happily surprised with the new features and performance.

How can we grow the MySQL Community? It has always been hard to find qualified MySQL Developers and Database Administrators and there is still a great shortage. The NoSQL world has bright shinny 'toys' and MySQL is now in a 'young adult stage'. With containerization and verbalization there is more demand for the MySQL skills but that does not seem to be growing the community at the same pace. So how do we promote our community to attract more people, how do we promote the knowledge of MySQL skills to hiring managers, is there a way to mentor new people as does the PHP Community, and how do we provide support for each other. Please come to provide your ideas so we can get more of us.

The MySQL Certification exams are much more difficult and maybe more relevant to the true job functions but it seems to have slipped in prestige. AWS, Aurora, other other similar technologies are MySQL-like but how do we leverage those professionals into the MySQL Community? So how do we promote our community to attract more people, how do we promote the knowledge of MySQL skills to hiring managers, is there a way to mentor new people as does the PHP Community, and how do we provide support for each other. I honestly think it is time we try to coalesce strategies to help build and promote the MySQL community. Please come to provide your ideas so we can get more of us.
