TrieHash is a perfect hash function generator written for APT (and dpkg is in progress). It generates C code from a given list of words, that code performs substantially faster than competing perfect hash functions. I'll be discussing the basics of tries, compiler optimizations, and tricks for multi-byte access and case-insensitive comparisons in (GNU) C, and how these techniques were used to build TrieHash.

There are a lot of new things in APT to discover. This talk will showcase new features and improvements in apt 1.9, what my vision for apt 2.0 looks like, and what we still need to do. I'll also discuss some changes to python-apt that will allow us to write faster python-apt applications, and showcase some noteworthy changes in other related packages such as dpkg and unattended-upgrades.

Upgrades often involve redownloading package content that is already on your system, wasting bandwidth, and thus potentially time. debdelta has been around for quite some time solving the bandwidth problem, but it's approach to deltas is slow - it reconstructs .deb files, including compression; hence with a DSL connection, it's going to be slower than no deltas. This talk introduces [a new approach to delta upgrades](https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Dpkg/Spec/DeltaDebs "a new approach to delta upgrades") that is substantially faster than debdelta; and, with tiny patches to dpkg, these deltas can be installed just like a .deb - without needing to reconstruct anything-

This talk will look at the developments since last DebConf and what our plans are for the future. Highlights: - zstd support for APT, dpkg; and what it means for us - the dpkg frontend lock - evaluation of seccomp sandboxing; problems with it - happy eyeballs and what it means for apt on mixed ipv6/ipv4 networks - new JSON-RPC-based hooks for apt; and an outlook on future possibilities for more complete RPC - $random other bits

I'll talk about what changed in APT since last DebConf, and what plans we have for the future. * Reworking automatic updates and unattended-upgrades to work more reliably and predictably - when and how does apt do stuff automatically? * A look at porting APT to FreeBSD and macOS (the latter being WIP) * Moving the https method away from curl and into the standard APT package * An overview of new features and changes

Apt is used by a lot of people every day to update their systems, install software, and remove software on Debian, Ubuntu, and other derivatives. Some people actually forked an old apt and run it on some kind of fruit phones. The APT library is also used by aptitude, a formidable ncurses frontend. This talk discusses three major topics of APT development in the past year: Firstly, security improvements such as acquire method sandboxing and the deprecation of SHA1 support. Secondly, performance improvements: Between 1.1 and 1.2 there were many commits improving performance, both for the update command and building the cache itself (hello, phones!). Thirdly, we will take a look at the new pinning engine introduced in 1.1 at last year's DebConf, how it is different from the older engine, and why it is much better and actually does what you mean instead of nonsense.
