One of DebConf’s recurring activities is the Key Signing Party. It helps Debian strengthen and expand its web of trust. This session will: - Explain how keysigning is done in a DebConf setting - Validate the SHA256 hash of the KSP coordination document - Explain how to participate to people who did not send their keys in time Once DebConf is closer, we will link from this talk proposal to the relevant documents you should have in hand for the keysigning party.

This talk will be useful for people who are starting with container technologies or using them for a while and wanted to explore other alternatives to docker on a Debian system. In this talk, I will share my experiences with Podman which is an open-source native tool of Linux used for creating, managing, and running not only the containers but also the pods as well. I will discuss how Podman is different from docker, and what are its advantages over docker. Also, I will discuss my journey and challenges in learning Podman on my Debian system while migrating from docker. Will also share my Debian images container deployed on OpenShift using Podman for creating, building, and testing. This talk will benefit people to explore other container managing technologies other than docker and kubernetes and the advantages of Podman over them.

This talk is aimed at current Debian users who want to help friends and family members who could benefit from migrating to Debian and Free Software. Attracting new users to Free Software and to Debian has been an interesting challenge for years. Multiple approaches have been used and some were proven to be better than others. I want to discuss some strategies that can be used to help people understand and embrace the change towards a world with more freedom and privacy, using the example of the "cursoGNU" group in Brazil, led by Paulo "Kretcheu" (https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?email=kretcheu%40gmail.com) which started off as a support group for a free GNU/Linux Debian-based video course and became a 1,000+ individuals strong community. Some strategies I want to bring up: - How to make sure the person understands what is happening on this move. Going beyond the idea of just replacing the operating system or software suite. - Common barriers for new starters and how to overcome them. E.g. fear of the shell, language and regional aspects, dealing with trolls, need for geography and language focused initiatives - "Adopting" a new user: helping them get started and holding their hand through their journey.

A look at what's new (and old) in arm world. Arm64 is maturing as an architecture with a list of new features, and instructions. Some of them are interesting, but ABI-incompatible with the existing arm64 port and at some point we will have to think about whether there is anything that might be important enough to justify a new port. Meanwhile 32-bit arm is increasingly being relegated to embedded-world and our ports get harder to support as upstreams lose interest in baselines faster than we do. And there is the looming 2036 deadline for 32-bit time_t. We need to deal with that more or less immediately if we are going to. I'll tell you what's gone on so far and what I reckon we should do next. So this talk will be a bit of a romp through stuff that is going on with the arm ports, and hopefully inform people enough to have an intelligent discussion about the future.

In this talk I will introduce the [Sequoia-PGP](https://sequoia-pgp.org/) project, its social and technical goals, what we have accomplished so far and what we hope to accomplish in the future. I will also highlight important projects in the broader ecosystem, notably [OpenPGP-CA](https://openpgp-ca.org/), the [OpenPGP Interoperability Test Suite](https://tests.sequoia-pgp.org/), [Hagrid](https://keys.openpgp.org/), the [Octopus](https://gitlab.com/sequoia-pgp/sequoia-octopus-librnp), and the [Chameleon](https://gitlab.com/sequoia-pgp/sequoia-chameleon-gnupg). I will briefly highlight the most important changes that the upcoming revision of the OpenPGP protocol will bring for developers and users. Finally, I want to talk about one of the core strengths of the OpenPGP protocol: authentication. I will highlight how OpenPGP-CA makes a once cumbersome process transparent to the end users, by leveraging existing organizational trust boundaries, and how Debian and the broader Free Software ecosystem can use this to build a secure and ergonomic authentication mechanism from the bottom up. To conclude, I want to discuss how this enables us to protect the software supply chain from the version control systems to source and binary packages.

Introducing fasttrack.debian.net as a way of delivering fast paced projects in Debian. The main motivation was gitlab package getting removed from stable when we could not backport security updates to the version in stable since upstream supports security updates only for 3 months. This also triggered gitlab getting removed from testing and backports as well. Looking for more contributors to provide more features like source only uploads by setting up buildd.

Debian Fast Track is a repository that allows making “backports” of packages available to users of the stable distribution, if those packages cannot be maintained in testing and backported in the usual way. GitLab is a web-based Git repository management tool which also provides other features such as issue-following capabilities, wikis, CI/CD capabilities, project management tools etc. In this talk we will cover the Gitlab Installation process using the Debian FastTrack repository. We will be using a Debian Stable server add demo up the addition of the fast track repository to install Gitlab on it. This talk hopes to accomplish the following. - Primer to Debian FastTrack - Installation process of Gitlab using FastTrack repository on a Debian Server. - Be a documented video source for the Gitlab Installation process on Debian.

Consfigurator is a system for declarative configuration management using Common Lisp. You can use it to configure hosts as root, deploy services as unprivileged users, build and deploy containers, install operating systems, produce disc images, and more. Some key advantages: - Apply configuration by transparently starting up another Lisp image on the machine to be configured, so that you can use the full power of Common Lisp to inspect and control the host. - Also define properties of hosts in a more restricted language, that of :POSIX properties, to configure machines, containers and user accounts where you can’t install Lisp. These properties can be applied using just an SSH or serial connection, but they can also be applied by remote Lisp images, enabling code reuse. - Flexibly chain and nest methods of connecting to hosts. For example, you could have Consfigurator SSH to a host, sudo to root, start up Lisp, use the setns(2) system call to enter a Linux container, and then deploy a service. Secrets, and other prerequisite data, are properly passed along. - Combine declarative semantics for defining hosts and services with a multiparadigmatic general-purpose programming language that won’t get in your way. Consfigurator is particularly well-suited for deploying Debian systems because it was written by an experienced DD. But moreover, I see Consfigurator as part of the project of bringing over to Debian the best ideas we find in contemporary alternatives to Debian-style package management, like the GNU Guix System and NixOS. Tools like Consfigurator and Propellor try to layer the power of declarative and reproducible configuration semantics on top of traditional, battle-tested UNIX system administration infrastructure like distro package managers, package archives and daemon configuration mechanisms, rather than seeking to replace any of those. I'll share some of Consfigurator's unique features that might make administrators of Debian systems interested in using it, and explain how one of the project's goals is to get as much as possible out of all that existing distro policy-compliant work.

The Debian project is one of the heaviest users of the OpenPGP Web-of-Trust (WoT): Not only we use OpenPGP keys as one of the main ways to identify to different parts of our infrastructure (mainly, package uploads and GR voting), we also give a lot of weight to the relations, the connectedness, the social graph that the WoT draws for us. The WoT is, however, under attack from many different flanks. Protocol vulnerabilities, a threat model not compatible with current regulations (GDPR, I'm looking at you), and an Internet much less naïve and forgiving than the one that existed in the early 1990s force us to reconsider how the WoT works and how we use it. I am doing my PhD work following this line of thought, and I want to share with the project my work so far. The work is quite far from finished (and I want to use your input to help me fill in the blanks).

The nature of embedded devices is that they are generally hiding from their users. This is even more true for those that are part of our critical infrastructure. Therefore it is rarely publicly known what is actually running inside. At Siemens, we are developing a broad portfolio of such devices. A lot of them are using Linux these days - and an many of those are now Debian-based. In this talk, we will try to lift the curtains a bit and present some Debian-based product examples, from small IoT gateways up magnetic resonance imaging solutions. We will talk about why Debian was chosen, how it is being integrated and maintained, what our engineers are happy about and where they see room for improvements. Furthermore, we will talk about which contributions to the Debian ecosystem evolved out of this already and how we want to do more.

Some time ago John Paul Adrian Glaubitz [proposed](https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2020/11/msg00381.html "proposed") to take a different approach on how we handle release architectures by migrating to a tier system. I'd like to think about what would be needed to achieve that, as I believe it would make the [Release Architecture Qualification](https://release.debian.org/testing/arch_qualify.html) process less painful. Obvious tools involved are `dak` and `britney`, which may need [changes](https://salsa.debian.org/debian/grow-your-ideas/-/issues/5), but we believe this is more about aligning ideas that technical challenges. I'd like to come up with first draft of a list of (technical) requirements, involved teams and needed alignment.

My talk would be about my all-round experience with Debian within the space of three months of my Outreachy internship. My talk will touch the following points: 1. I'd be talking about my general experiences with Debian, (1) as a software, (2) as a Debian contribuor, (3) while interacting with other community members. 2. I'd also be sharing the knowledge I gained while I was an Outreachy intern working on the Webpack 5 & Node.js 16 Transitioning. 3. In this talk Holger Levsen will give an update on Reproducible Builds of Debian and beyond. He’ll briefly sum up the status in Bullseye, then present development goals and choices for Bookworm, what’s planned, being built and wished for! Bookworm will be the fourth Debian release since work on Reproducible Builds of Debian has really started: we started with the beginning of the Stretch cycle, then continued with Buster and Bullseye, and this year we're working on making Bookworm more reproducible, while already knowing we won't be done once Bookworm will be released. In this talk Holger will explain what exactly has been improved, where we are, why we still are not “there” yet (nor in 12 months) and what our immediate plans are. So come and see this talk!

Or "Exploring free-software fonts in their native parametric spaces." Software interfaces for users to access their font collection are dominated by decades of legacy: generic descriptors like Bold/Italic/Bold-Italic or fixed numerical schemes like CSS and Windows' weight-and-width models. But those labels and encodings don't communicate much. Font X at weight:300 may look nothing like Font Y at weight:300. And they rarely apply well to scripts outside of European languages. Plus, there is no guarantee that fonts even have all of the necessary metadata fields complete and reasonably accurate. This session will present some alternative approaches for navigating font families via analytic means, digging into the underlying parameters and design-space variations of typographic characteristics. It will draw on analysis of letterform detail and typeface normalization that I conducted during my PhD studies, and explore how those abstract analyses could be applied to representing individual fonts, font families, and even entire font collections in alternative ways that may better line up with how readers experience type on a page. All users of fonts, from casual users who only occasionally produce a large, complex document to serious designers and typesetters who regularly grapple with finding the font that fits their needs, will come away with a new perspective on how to search for and find appropriate fonts and sets of fonts. Software developers and package maintainers will leave with new food for thought about how Debian and individual FOSS application projects could rethink how fonts are cataloged, packaged, and presented. The talk will also discuss how large-scale font libraries such as the Debian archive can be explored and queried for their coverage of design-space and for identifying various chinks and under-served spaces. It will end with a look at where libre-licensed fonts and legacy fonts can be patched or bolstered with new metadata to describe the facets of design-space that the generic schemes and coding schemes of the past rarely explore.

The role of Debian Account Managers has become the last resort for community issues that do not resolve themselves and I believe this is not healthy for Debian and for Debian Account Managers. I will attempt to deconstruct the expectations and responsibilities that have been piling up on the DAM hat over the years, and figure out how many of them necessarily belong to DAM, and how many could be shared with more, or all, of our community.

Bring and engage people to be part of a local community it's a real challenge. During the last 3 years inside our local community, called Debian Brasília located in the capital of Brazil, we learned a lot about how to keep people contributing and participating in our regular activities. In this talk, we are going to present the dynamic of our meetings, how we are keeping the communication alive between active members, and methods to engage new people, trying to help them in achieving their goals in the context of the Debian Project or free software in general. We will be sharing the mistakes we made and what changes we made to work around them.

This is for people that want to use Debian on a custom embedded hardware instead of building and maintaining a complete own distribution. It will be shown how to maintain and build customized Debian packages and images for different targets on a kubernetes cluster. The current implementation is running on rancher and reuses parts of ELBE (https://github.com/linutronix/elbe) along with pbuilder. Jenkins is used as scheduler. Jobs are triggered with webhooks out of gitlab. The packages and images are available on Nexus. The talk will show how to setup and use the infrastructure. The benefits, drawbacks and opportunities can be discussed.

Usually containers are used to run services, but why not run a full desktop on them? It is possible, it is useful (not just for testing), and it is more efficient and convenient than using virtual machines. In this presentation I will demonstrate how to run different desktops (Xfce, LMDE, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE) on containers. We will try both Docker and LXC/LXD containers.

Debian is deployed in a large number and wide variety of environments. Why? Because it's a central pillar of the Linux community and the quality of the distribution shows it. That said, those that deploy Debian just like Debian itself, are facing new challenges in a computing ecosystem that have dramatically changed over the last decade! The quantity of publicly documented security vulnerabilities in the MITRE National Vulnerability Database has increased by almost 5X. The number of vulnerabilities that don't get documented in official databases is growing. The number of silent fixes being done by communities because they don't want to deal with the overhead is growing. The unique environments that Linux is being deployed is growing. It's an onslaught that continues to trend in the wrong direction ending up in creating things like US Presidential Executive Order 14028. There are some ways that Debian can help those that consume it face these daunting challenges. To that end, I'd like to discuss some possible ways the community can help make it easier to face these challenges as well as ways others can help the community. The audience for this talk is all Debian Developers. Security vulnerabilities affect everyone. What will they get out of it? Hopefully, the spark of an idea for how we all can help Debian face these challenges? What will I cover? Everything from changes in the computing ecosystem, problems the current industry vulnerability tracking systems are facing, how communities are responding to CVEs, Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), and other ways of making it easy for consumers of Debian to understand the security of their software.

`autopkgtest` is a test automation tool for Debian packages, is at the heart of the [Debian Continuous Integration platform](https://ci.debian.net/), and more importantly, a central part of the contemporary Debian release process and quality control efforts. Having more packages with `autopkgtest` support helps both package maintainers and the collective effort of making high quality Debian releases. In 2017, Canonical announced that their flagship Ubuntu desktop product would switch back to providing an optimized GNOME experience. Meanwhile there was a renewed effort for Ubuntu developers to work alongside Debian developers to build the best experience possible for everyone using Ubuntu or Debian. This presentation discusses the recent history and current status of Debian and Ubuntu collaboration in the packaging team. It concludes with a discussion of what works well, where more work is needed, and ideas for the future.

There are currently different ways to get started in the world of Debian, as in its community and as an operating system. In order to do the software packaging for Debian, we need to a clean Debian environment, which usually is a Debian Unstable. This Debian unstable environment for doing the packaging can be setup using different ways, most popular of them being chroot, container tools like lxc, Docker, and VMs as well as bare metals. This talk will cover the process of setting up the Development environment for Debian Packaging. using different tools available on Debian using some of the tools mentioned above including chroot, LXC and Docker. This process is already well documented on Debian Wiki, this talk would be a documented video source for the Debian Packaging tutorial.

The Debian Android Tools team is focused on packaging the Android development tools for Debian. The goal of this team is to get as much of the Android SDK and development tools into Debian as possible. In the past year, we planned to have major feature inclusion which helps both android and java teams by bringing Kotlin language and updating android packages, and, Gradle which is one of the major build systems for both java and kotlin projects. Major changes bring with major work and responsibility. Since kotlin and Gradle are dependent there are a lot of things to discuss along with the android packages update. Gladly with lots of people’s support and contributions, now kotlin is unstable. Apart from discussing the new features, various discussions about team maintenance and its future and interaction with the outreach students are also expected to happen.

The Debian base image size and features provided are increasing year by year. Therefore, due to its large size for embedded devices and containers, Debian may not be adopted by the system. This time, while following the existing package system, we examined and implemented an image construction method using busybox and mmdebstrap.

The Linux kernel has a very active development community, constantly adding not only new hardware support but new features. Some of these features can simply be enabled by the configuration in the Debian package, but some also require support from other user-space packages. This talk will cover some of the more interesting changes made in the past year, and any work that’s still needed to support these in Debian.

In Debian, there is debian/copyright as a file that describes the copyright information of software, but the update of this is left to the package maintainer, and there are some packages that are not updated and the contents do not match. Therefore, Debian users may use a tool to check it separately from his file contents. This is too efficient and think that it is not good for Debian itself. We want to update as much as possible and reduce the burden on developers and users. This time, not only us but also the other works are being made, and we summarized the current situation and how to update and keep debian/copyright.

Chromebooks are purpose-built computers that run Chrome OS, Google's Linux-based operating system. Although they are locked-down by default, there's a convenient 'Developer Mode' that fully unlocks them and lets owners run other OSes like Debian. Google publishes most of the software on them as FOSS, including the boot firmware (based on coreboot) and even the embedded controller, which makes them interesting computers to work on from a free-software standpoint. However, the Chrome OS firmware does not support ordinary boot methods like UEFI, but instead implements a custom verified boot flow due to their focus on security and speed. As a result, the usual strategy of writing Debian Installer to a USB drive and booting from it does not always work (for example on ARM chromebooks). There are a lot of guides on how to manually install Debian and shape it into a format this verified boot mechanism accepts, but even then some steps have to be repeated after every kernel and initramfs update. I got annoyed by the current situation, decided to automate it all, generalize it to all chromebooks and integrate it with Debian such that everything "just works" to the point where we actually can write Debian Installer to a USB drive, go through it and get a working system that will handle the Chrome OS firmware automatically. Along the way, I also discovered ways to run U-Boot from my chromebook's firmware, and ultimately managed to replace it entirely with U-Boot. In this talk I'll try to explain the things I had to learn and do, to the best of my abilities. Ideally, including these topics to some extent: - Details on the Chrome OS verified boot mechanism - Making it chainload into a secondary bootloader like U-Boot - Making it boot a Debian kernel, initramfs, device-tree etc. - Supporting A/B updates and rollbacks like Chrome OS does - Automating everything necessary to manage the verified boot firmware - Integration with kernel and initramfs-tools upgrade hooks - Debian Installer (partman) integration for special Chrome OS partitions - Adding a new Debian Installer step to setup things for verified boot - How to make Debian kernel/initramfs/installer support new hardware - Getting U-Boot to support my rk3399-gru-kevin chromebook

`pristine-tar` is a magical tool that can regenerate a pristine upstream tarball using only a small binary delta file and a revision control checkout of the upstream branch. Since its creation, it’s become part of the Mercurial- and Git-based workflows of many individual maintainers and teams, as it provides a way to essentially produce Debian source packages using Git-based tooling only, without the need to be able to talk to the archive or a package mirror. Despite its usefulness, `pristine-tar` suffers from [some inherent drawbacks](https://terceiro.xyz/2017/10/09/pristine-tar-updates/). It attempts to reconstruct output of unknown versions of compressors such as gzip, including all of their quirks and weirdness, generating byte-by-byte identical compressed files. This task is very difficult as compressors evolve and their output changes. `pristine-lfs` attempts to be a replacement for `pristine-tar`, while attacking the problem differently. It utilises the Git LFS mechanism to store the tarballs next to the Git repository in the dedicated file storage. Git LFS is supported by GitLab (and hence by Salsa), GitHub and other online Git hosting providers.

Offering Linux Support to a large user-base can be a daunting task for SysAdmins who maintain a diverse fleet of user-facing Linux laptops and desktops. There is only so much time a team in charge of maintaining a linux distribution (“the distro team”) has to devote to issues brought to their attention (also called “escalations"). Making linux support scalable can be divided into two categories: solving issues before they even get raised to the distro team, and making sure that the distro team can quickly start working on the issues that are escalated to them. The gLinux Team maintains Google’s internal Linux distribution based on Debian Testing, supporting a large fleet of machines, composed of diverse hardware. This talk will be given by a current member of the gLinux Team, and will cover some of the tools, strategies and policies that gLinux has implemented over the years to provide scalable Linux support internally. While some of the lessons learned might apply only to large organisations, the goal of this talk is to give SysAdmins with fleets of any size actionable takeaways to improve Linux support in their specific situation. In this talk we’re going to cover the following: ##### Preventing Escalations Before They Happen: - **Making Your Machines “Self-Healing”**: automating fixes for the most common breakages. - **Flag Common Issues**: reduce the amount of troubleshooting necessary by detecting and flagging common issues. - **Train Support Techs on Linux**: Ensure all techs have a good baseline understanding of Linux, including hands-on training. - **Document Common User Journeys**: Think like an end-user, what would users need to do on their machines? - **To Root or Not to Root**: The more permissions your users have, the more likely it is that they can break their machines. ##### Ensure The Escalations You Get Are Actionable: - **Automate Log Gathering**: Make it simple and automated for users and techs to get the correct logs and system information. - **Have A Clear Escalation Policy**: Define the scope of issues dealt with by the support team and by the systems administrators. Document the escalation path for users and support. - **Communicate Breakages with Users and Support**: Ensure users and support staff are aware of outages and issues that affect them, with workarounds if available.

Debian Derivatives BoF Session. =============================== A Debian derivative is a distribution that is based on the work done in Debian but has its own identity, goals and audience and is created by an entity that is independent from Debian. Derivatives modify Debian to achieve the goals they set for themselves. DebConf usually also has people contributing to multiple Debian Derivatives. This BoF session would be an opportunity for these distro communities to share/collaborate/discuss the issues and opportunities on Debian derivatives development. Also it will give an opportunity to Debian derivatives team to discuss on how Debian and derivatives better collaborate with each other more inclusively.

A while ago `dpkg` gained a switch `--force-script-chrootless` and started setting a variable `DPKG_ROOT` when executing maintainer scripts. How does this work precisely? HA (High Availability) is an important requirement for many enterprise solutions, the usage of Corosync/Pacemaker clusters and related packages is key to achieve that in multiple scenarios. RedHat has been the upstream of most of the HA related software and their approach to maintain those packages in their distribution is a bit different than ours. Should we try to follow them? The talk simply gives a summary of the problem we tried to solve in the May 2021 Outreachy internship which is to create a Yarn plugin that resolves node modules installed as Debian packages through apt, the methods employed in solving the problem, and the length we were able to cover. In my opinion, the way we deal with (non-free) firmware in Debian is a mess, and this is hurting many of our users daily. For a long time we've been pretending that supporting and including (non-free) firmware on Debian systems is not necessary. We don't want to have to provide (non-free) firmware to our users, and in an ideal world we wouldn't need to. This talk will focus on using Free Software to fight against digital authoritarianism. We live in a world where digital rights are slowly becoming human rights. There are tools which are needed to fight against this quick takeover of our digital lives. An example of this is the open-source website internetshutdowns.in which was created as an open-source tool and is perhaps the only real-time tracker of Internet shutdowns in the world. During COVID we saw, many governments coming up with contact tracking apps that would steal the data of citizens without any privacy-protecting ways. Open source mandates can really work to counter these.

Debian community in India has a long and diverse history. Earliest events date back to 2006 when various free software developers from India joined Debian under various roles. Due to this, Debian is partially/fully available in 11 local Indian languages. A number of events including MiniDebConf, release parties, Debian Utsav/Utsavam has helped grow the community. We recently hosted the online MiniDebConf India which had 48+ talks/events from 6 local languages under two tracks. We’re also getting ready to host the Debian community in DebConf 2023 scheduled to held in India. These events have given us the platform to publicize the use, adoption and contribution of Debian in India. Greetings! [vlang](https://vlang.io/ "") is a new programming language which is under development. V is designed to be simple and maintainable, minimalist and safe on the other hand. In addition to being cross-platform, it can be used for system programming, networking, web development, gaming, GUI and tooling. For me, as a mainly C lover, integrability of V with C, is one of the things that I love the most. It is quite similar to Go with some improvements. By being a simple language, the vlang gives the chance for programmers to develop starting from prototyping small tools and up to big maintainable applications. With this being said, I think it worth it to share an introduction of V (and integration with C) with the DebConf community. It would be a great opportunity for V to be present to debconfers in general, and developers in particular. Since V is a new language and most likely, this is going to be the first presentation ever of the Vlang on the DebConf (and not only), I would start with: an introduction to V; going through basics of syntax; how to develop a module and integration with C.
