This is the annual Debian Ruby team BoF. This is time we would gather together to discuss the work they’ve done so far and the work that needs to be done for Ruby 3.0. Besides that, this meeting will be used to discuss other activities that are going within the team, like new workflows, what’s working and what’s not, etcetera. And lastly, we’d decide the logistics of the next possible sprints :)

Even stable is updated once in a while. Those updates are called "Point Releases". They usually incorporate the security fixes released until the time of the update and fixes for important bugs in the current release. Whilst there are over hundreds of bugs fixed in each point update, there are even more that can be fixed with your help! This talk takes you through that and tells you how exactly can you help fix those bugs/security issues and help in preparing a solid point update!

On July 18th Stretch LTS starts, offering two more years of security support to the Debian Stretch release. Stretch LTS will be the fourth iteration of LTS, following Squeeze LTS which started in 2014, Wheezy LTS in 2016, and Jessie LTS in 2018. The LTS team would like to gather together to discuss the work they’ve done so far and the work that needs to be done for the upcoming years, areas that could be improved upon, and potentially discussing the feedback that we've got from the LTS survey!

Like previous years, the Debian Ruby team would gather together to discuss the work they've done so far and the work that needs to be done for Ruby 3.0. The Ruby team maintains over 1500 packages in Debian. I have been active in the Ruby team for a while now. And I believe that we, the Ruby team, as a whole, can improve on a lot of things, like, sponsoring new contributor's packages, taking sessions, etcetera. During the BOF session, I'd be discussing a few topics like them, which would encourage more new contributors to join the team and help us in the maintenance of all the gems and applications. Moreover, something that worries me is the "retainment rate" of the new contributors. If this continues, then after few years down the line, the Ruby team would be in a little trouble. There are a lot of packages under the team and so is the need for more contributors. And it'd be lovely to have more DMs and DDs emerging out in this process :)

This is mostly a journey talk, where I talk about why I took the "Debian road" and how the meaning of Debian evolved over months for me. From the technical things to the philosophical side, expiating the horrible mistakes I made all the way, I share the story of a 19 y/o who, with no prior experience in Ruby, JavaScript, Golang, and Perl, helped in over 200+ packages and became the youngest Debian Maintainer in India in less than 90 days. With this, I hope other new people would get on-board with the Debian project :)
