In this session, we will reconstruct a real 3D object using a camera and free software!

Photogrammetry is the reconstruction of 3D information about objects from a photograph or multiple photographs -- like 3D scanning but with cameras. While closed source tools to do this are quite well marketed and hyped, it might come as a surprise that we can accomplish similar results with free software. The workshop will go over some of these tools, and their use and installation, and participants should be able to go home and do the same with their own computers and cameras. Some familiarity with command line tools, software installation, and 3D graphics might help, but the workshop should be understandable to people with any level of technical ability.

Please bring your own laptop and, if you have one, a camera.

While Blender's typical interface is aimed squarely at 3D artists, and it's Python API provides a powerful way to make great procedural art through coding, there is also a third way in between, via two animation addons, Sverchok and Animation Nodes. This workshop will walk through using Animation Nodes to create procedural animation without writing a line of code - instead we'll do 'visual programming' via node trees, to create procedural art.

Blender is a versatile Free 3D animation program that is most famously used as an artist tool. However, it also has a rich, pythonic and consistent api that allows extending and controlling the application. We'll explore techniques to use this api for creating 3D meshes, that could be a foundation/ inspiration for generative architecture or art.

Familiarity with Blender is not required (but recommended) and at least a basic knowledge of Python would be helpful for this workshop.

Blender is the free 3D Animation Software used to make this year's FSF 30'th anniversary video. This session is lead by the maker of the video, and aims to provide a fun introduction to using blender. We'll cover the basics, partially using files from the video, and introduce various aspects of the software - rendering, animation and a bit about the Python api. Bring a laptop with a copy of blender from your distro or from blender.org!
