OpenJDK is now a well established Free Software Ecosystem, with a vibrant Community and lots of interesting stuff going on, with projects, repositories, bug database and above all experiments!

This is exciting and fun, but given the challenges of such massive project, it is intimidating and it is easy to get lost. It is also easy to forget that such massive infrastructure requires well defined rules, that are sometime perceived as blocking rather than aiding the participation. To help people wanting to contribute keep track of this intricate forest of development and find their way in, the Adoption Group was created (http://openjdk.java.net/groups/adoption/).

This session is an exchange between few of the hackers directly involved with the Adoption Group and the public, we will answer questions the audience may have in relation to getting involved with OpenJDK, try to define and explain workarounds for most common problems (and blockers!) that newcomers face, discuss some of the projects we are currently involved with, and hope to be your Ariadne's thread to win back the fun of contributing and participating at all levels, without ever getting lost!

We will indeed discuss some of the projects we are currently involved with - like the planned global hack days for jsonp, jigsaw and tools that use jigsaw and http 2.0 with language interoperability - but above all we will answer questions the audience may have in relation to getting involved with OpenJDK, both from a technical perspective and a social one, so that next year you can sit together with us helping even more people to jump on the fun!

The Java Community Process (JCP) program has made significant changes over the last 12-18 month period in order to increase community participation in the development of Java Specification Requests (JSR) and to enable greater transparency for the community into the JSR expert groups. Reforms to the JCP through JCP.Next as well as the creation of the Adopt-a-JSR program have enabled this involvement from the community that is vital to the success of Java. The free and open source community now have greater opportunities for contributions and feedback . We will discuss the current state of the nation and ask for feedback and suggestions for greater participation moving forward through the ongoing JCP.Next effort, specifically JSR 358, A major revision to the Java Community Process.

The Adopt OpenJDK project is just over 1 year old. We will review where we came from, whence we spent our effort & where we’re going. The next 12 months represents, in our view, the most amazing time for developers to get involved in the platform. This is going to be brilliant.

In 2011 the London Java Community (LJC) stood for, and overwhelmingly won a seat in the open elections for a seat on the JCP Executive Committee (JCP EC), enough acronyms yet? We haven't even started! It's been a whirlwind trip so far with a great deal learned about politics, acronyms, the due diligence required on a JSR, flights to exotic places (Jersey City!?), wrangling over the wording of a sentence and of course launching some developer lead initiatives. There have of course been some great successes in moving Free Java forward such as the JSR-348 which is the start of reforming the JCP and JSRs towards a truly open and transparent model. This talk covers the good works done so far, some anecdotes of what it's like to work as a developer amongst a mix of technologists and bearucrats and what we think is left to be done.

What the audience will learn from the talk: An insight to how the JCP really works and the surprising fact that Oracle and the other large corporates are generally pushing for a Free Java. How can people help out with the project, what feedback are you looking for? We want people to start supporting the JCP again and working with it to change it for the better, JSR-348 has proven that steps can be taken although we recognize there is still a long way to go.
